Rotala rotundifolia 'Blood Red' is considered the most intensely red form of this popular aquarium plant. Its deep crimson tones are even darker and richer than those of the well-known R. rotundifolia ‘Colorata’, making it a striking centerpiece in any aquascape. When placed alongside bright green plants, its vibrant red hue stands out dramatically.
This plant is relatively easy to grow and can adapt to modest lighting and nutrient levels, but to unlock its most vivid coloration, strong lighting and added CO₂ are essential. The stems grow upright to slightly arching, and under very intense light they may even spread more horizontally. Left untrimmed, shoots can reach over 50 cm in length, though the plant tends to look its best when maintained at 20–40 cm.
Regular trimming and replanting of cuttings not only keep the plant at an attractive height but also encourage branching and dense, bushy growth. Occasional pruning improves light penetration and water circulation, ensuring the lower portions of the plant remain healthy and vibrant.
