Cryptocoryne spiralis 'Tiger' is a unique aquarium plant that is suitable for the midground area of a planted aquarium. This Crypt variety is characterized by long, thin leaves that display an interesting pattern and are reddish brown in color. Cryptocoryne spiralis 'Tiger' is a medium to large sized specimen, making it a fantastic choice for transitioning the midground to the background area of the planted tank. Like other Cryptocoryne plants, Cryptocoryne spiralis 'Tiger' is relatively easy-going, but needs to become established first. We recommend planting this species in an aquarium that is already established as newly setup aquariums may contribute to chances of Crypt melt. Once this aquarium plant grows a solid root system, it is sure to standout in the aquascape layout!

As several other Cryptocoryne spiralis forms, 'Tiger' is apparently a quite easy aquarium plant. Nutrient-rich substrate and CO2 addition are very beneficial for its growth. It is not a low-light plant, the lighting should be at least moderate, and strong light enhances its showy coloration. With time, daughter rosettes appear at the base of the plant that develops a tuft with many leaves and strong roots. The daughter plants can be cut off for propagation. We have not yet noticed long runners in C. spiralis 'Tiger'.

Cryptocoryne spiralis 'Tiger' is an eye-catcher in not too small aquariums, best as a solitary bush in the midground. Its red-brown tones contrast well with light green plants.

The cultivar 'Platinum' is found on Lingga island in the Riau Archipellago province of Sumatra. Each stream has several patches with the broad leaved C. nurii var. nurii. This special one has white veins as a permanent character and is therefore attractive for aquarists. It was discovered in 2009 by Mr. Nakamoto and in 2014 Mr. Kettner described this cultivar. A true gem for any crypt collector!

A new species from the island of Bangka and Belitung near Sumatra. For a long time C. bangkaensis was considered as C. scurillis. C. bangkaensis is characterized by its limb with a more or less bumped surface with only protuberances on the margin of the limb, a narrow throat and a pronounced collar. The limb is mostly recurved and not fully flattened and is finely dotted. The chromosome number is 2n = 68.

Cryptocoryne matakensis was first registered as a new species in the magazine Aquaplanta (German magazine) in 2014 by Japanese plant hunter. But There was rumors about this plant for a long time. In 1932 a European botanist went to Anambas Islands, and they wrote a journey for record has a documented about this water plant, but failed to take it back. C. matakensis has been considered a mystery since then. This water plant is endemic species in Matak island and Siantan island (Anambas Islands) in Riau Islands, Indonesia. It’s common species in Anambas islands. C. matakensis growing with Lasia spinosa along small streams. The flower of Cryptocoryne matakensis is similar to Cryptocoryne auriculata, but it is a different group, first the rhizomes are quite different. This plant is easy to cultivate. C. matakensis grows very well in leaf litter of the beech tree, both emerged as submerged. In their natural habitat the pH is rather high, between 5.0 and 6.5, so you may expect that they may grow in a normal aquarium. The chromosome number is 2n = 34.

Cryptocoryne pygmaea, dwarf crypt, comes from the Philippines. Other than its botancial and vernacular names suggest it doesn't stay especially small. On the islands Palawan, Busuanga and in western Mindanao this crypt populates rivers and rivulets, often with hard water, emersed as well as submersed, also in deeper water. For a long time it was only known from herbarium records. Most authors synonymised it with C. auriculata, which originates from Borneo (Sarawak). Only in about 1970 the first live specimens became known in Europe. In Kopenhagen, Niels Jacobsen found them in a shipment of C. aponogetifolia originating from the Philippines, and later identified them as C. pygmaea. In 1999, Jan Bastmeijer and Herson Morco found many natural habitats of this species in the north of Palawan. C. pygmaea has proven to be an excellent aquarium plant that is quite easy in cultivation. Despite that, this crypt is not very well-known in the hobby yet.

Endemic to the highlands of central Sri Lanka, the natural habitat of Crypt parva is along the banks of fast flowing rivers, an emersed marsh plant found in dense communities. Known as the smallest of the crypt species (only parva 'Mini' is smaller), it's bright grass green lanceolate leaves grow to 6 cm in height, dependent on available light and nutrients. Its small size makes it an excellent foreground plant. It has a very slow rate of growth. Rate of growth does not necessarily change even under ideal tank conditions. Crypt parva may require more light than other crypts due to its smaller leaf size, and does not do as well planted in shade conditions. Brighter light will create ideal growth patterns, with horizontal leaf spread. Lower light conditions will create more upright growth. Moderate light, CO2, root fertilization nutrient and nutrient rich substrate recommended for optimum growth. Enjoys iron and potassium to look its best, or susceptible to chlorotic and pinhole-riddled leaves. Flowers produced when grown emersed. Runners grown more frequently when grown emersed. Understanding Crypt melt - all Cryptocoryne species require stable water parameter and light conditions. Once planted, crypts should not be moved. It generally takes up to 30 days for a crypt to become established. Within a couple days of planting, any significant change in temperature, pH, hardness, nutrient, light intensity or duration, or root disturbance may cause the plant to 'melt' and disintegrate to mush. If this occurs, the roots tend to live, and new leaves may appear within several days or weeks, sometimes months.

This little Cryptocoryne comes from Asia, and grows naturally in for instance Thailand. The narrow, red-brown leaves have clear, black patterns and beautifully waving leaf edges. This striking Cryptocoryne variety stands out with its distinctive marbled pattern and deep reddish-purple undersides. The prominent veins appear darker than the surrounding leaf tissue, creating an eye-catching contrast. Under bright lighting, it initially forms a compact, low-growing rosette, staying under 10 cm in height. However, over time, especially in lower light conditions with ample nutrients, it can surpass 20 cm in height. It naturally spreads through underground runners, gradually forming a dense, lush cluster. When grown in shallow water or emersed conditions, it produces unique inflorescences with a bright yellow spathe and an elongated tube. This slow-growing aquatic plant is highly adaptable, thriving in both soft and hard water. It’s an excellent choice for aquariums with fish and no CO₂ supplementation, particularly those with dim to moderate lighting. However, it also flourishes in high-intensity lighting with added CO₂. A nutrient-rich substrate significantly enhances its growth. Ideal temperatures for this tropical species range between 22 and 28°C. Propagation is straightforward; simply separate the young plants that emerge along its underground stolons.

Cryptocoryne parva 'Mini' is the smallest of all Cryptocorynes (only 2-3cm tall and a roset less than 2-4 cm wide). It is one of the few species that does not significantly change its leaf shape and colour depending on cultivation conditions. It needs more light than most other Cryptocorynes because it almost loses its leaf blade under water. So it must never be overshadowed by other plants. Individual plants should be planted a few centimetres apart, and after about six months they will form a cohesive low group of plants. Recommended for foreground planting.
