Hygrophila serpyllum

€4.90
Hygrophila serpyllum is a unique creeping plant native to India, where it thrives in wetlands that periodically flood and dry. Unlike most Hygrophila species known in the hobby, this one has only recently been introduced to aquariums, making it a fresh addition for aquascapers. Underwater, its thin but resilient stems creep along the substrate, rooting at the nodes to form dense mats or compact bushes depending on light intensity. Its small, rounded leaves, about 1–1.5 cm long, are reminiscent of pennywort, but spread horizontally to create lush, textured growth. This versatile species is undemanding, tolerating a wide range of water conditions, with moderate requirements for CO₂ and nutrients. Stronger lighting encourages a low, carpet-like effect, while lower light produces a slightly taller, bushier form. With occasional trimming, Hygrophila serpyllum remains neat and compact, making it ideal for foreground or midground use in nature-style aquascapes.

Hygrophila polysperma 'Sunset'

€4.90
Hygrophila polysperma 'Sunset', or 'Rosanervig' (red-vein) as it was named by the Danish aquatic plant nursery Tropica, was originally cultivated in the mid 1980's. One note of interest about this plant is the white coloration the leaf veins often exhibit. This is not a sign of a deficiency but rather it is believed to be caused by a virus that blocks the production of chlorophyll in the surrounding tissue. This virus, fortunately, is specific to this particular species and poses absolutely no threat to anything else in the aquarium. This beautiful variation of the steadfast H. polysperma, a native of Asia, has become a common but popular addition to the planted aquarium hobby. This undemanding yet interesting stem plant is one of the easiest colored red plants to grow. Its ability to handle virtually any temperature (18-28C), pH (5-8), or hardness in the typical planted aquarium makes it suitable for many applications. While CO2 and high light are not requirements for this cultivar to grow, they are essential in bringing out the nice red to pink color for which this plant is famous. Iron is another factor in intense coloration without enough Fe in the water column, this plant will become pale or, in extreme deficiencies, even white. This plant, like many of the faster growing stem plants, can develop a tendency for horizontal growth and creep along the substrate. This is often caused by higher light levels and a plant's natural tendency to 'take over' as much space as it can before it changes to producing more vertical growth. Ways to avoid this are to crowd the plant or to increase phosphate (PO4) levels. Propagating and pruning this plant is very simple. Simply top and replant. This species produces many side shoots when pruned like a hedge, creating an attractive, manicured bush. H. polysperma 'Sunset' has great potential as a red stem plant. Its interesting leaf texture and color make it a great addition to the mid- or background. The leaf size, up to 5 cm, is not overly large, making it suitable for all but the smallest aquaria.

Hygrophila lancea 'Araguaia'

€5.90
This Hygrophila was named after the Brazilian river Araguaia in trade, however, later on it was identified as the Asian species Hygrophila lancea. Under water it grows lineal reddish-brown leaves with a lighter-coloured central vein. Its stems have a creeping growth habit, ramify well and form low bushes. It needs a good CO2 supply. Trimming the leaves maintains the bushy form. Hygrophila lancea 'Araguaia' needs intensive lighting, and in contrast to most other Hygrophila species it is a rather slow grower. Usually it is sold in its emerged form and differs very much from the underwater form, which develops after it has been placed in the aquarium.

Hygrophila sp. 'Brown'

€5.90
This undemanding stem plant is likely a variant of Hygrophila polysperma. It is still new to the aquarium hobby and was probably also introduced with the name Hygrophila sp. 'Thai'. The stems grow partly horizontal to ascending, forming loose, broad bushes. Hygrophila sp. 'Brown' grows well with medium lighting; optimal growth is achieved by CO2 injection and good nutrient supply. Trimming promotes the development of side shoots and a bushier growth. With its loose, bushy, somewhat irregular habit, this Hygrophila is well placed in the midground. With its coloration, It contrasts to light green plants. This fast-growing plant is also recommendable for freshly set-up tanks.

Price per: 3 stems (grown emersed).
