Limnobium laevigatum

€3.90
South-American frogbit is a popular floating plant for aquaria that is rather undemanding and grows fast. Its round smooth leaves are attractive in open tanks, the long roots bring a very natural, primeval feel to the aquarium. Limnobium laevigatum is especially suitable for fish and shrimp breeding tanks, as it removes surplus nutrients from the water very efficiently. The growth habit of the Amazon frogbit is comparable to other floating plants. The floating rosette forms runners regularly, at whose ends young plants grow. In calm-water zones of the aquarium, carpets of these plants will form after a relatively short time, which may lead to uncalled-for shading of the ground. Under strong light, with good fertilisation and high air humidity, emersed leaves may form above the waterline. CO2 injection furthers growth. This plant may even flower in the aquarium, although rarely. Propagation happens automatically. Under optimal conditions you will have a large quantity of frogbit very soon in your tank. Many people don't see how floating plants help an aquarium layout, as they create shaded areas and grow very long vertical roots. However, just these aspects can be integrated into a design. The play of shade and light can create interesting contrasts in a layout, and the elegant-looking roots may have a very decorative effect.

Salvinia cucullata

€3.90
Salvinia cucullata is a less common floating plant with small nickel sized leaves filled with pouches of air. Unlike other similar floating plants, Salvinia does not have long roots that drape into the water column. This small floating fern can grow into thick mats that cover the entire top of the tank and block out light from below. Its perfect for low tech aquariums and paludariums and can act as a good shading plant to prevent algae growth.

Price per: 5 plantlets.

Phyllanthus fluitans "Red root floater"

€4.90
Phyllanthus fluitans originates from the Amazon River Basin. Although coming from a family dominated by desert plants, this plant has adapted to become a floating plant in a very humid environment. This species is a little more common in the trade due to its fast growth when conditions are good. It sometimes goes by the name red root floater. P. fluitans is not too difficult to grow given enough light and nutrients. Lighting should be intense (shoot for around 3 watts per gallon or more). CO2 is unnecessary. Nitrate and phosphate should be kept above zero (10 ppm or more and 1 ppm or more respectively), as this plant, like most floating plants, prefers rich conditions. Heavy iron and micronutrient dosing is essential for the health of this plant; without enough iron, this plant will fail to thrive. When conditions are good, this floating plant will produce slightly reddish leaves with small white flowers. This small floating plant is very easy to prune, as you simply have to skim off any excess from the water's surface. However, due to its fast growth, the aquarist will have to remove excess plants quite frequently to prevent it from overshadowing plants below it. P. fluitans is most suited to open top tanks where its beautiful foliage and tiny flowers can be most appreciated. The hairy, red root system can add a touch of color to the upper levels of an aquascape as well.

Price per: 10 plants.
