Hygrophila serpyllum is a unique creeping plant native to India, where it thrives in wetlands that periodically flood and dry. Unlike most Hygrophila species known in the hobby, this one has only recently been introduced to aquariums, making it a fresh addition for aquascapers. Underwater, its thin but resilient stems creep along the substrate, rooting at the nodes to form dense mats or compact bushes depending on light intensity. Its small, rounded leaves, about 1–1.5 cm long, are reminiscent of pennywort, but spread horizontally to create lush, textured growth. This versatile species is undemanding, tolerating a wide range of water conditions, with moderate requirements for CO₂ and nutrients. Stronger lighting encourages a low, carpet-like effect, while lower light produces a slightly taller, bushier form. With occasional trimming, Hygrophila serpyllum remains neat and compact, making it ideal for foreground or midground use in nature-style aquascapes.

Samolus valerandi (Seaside brookweed or rivuletweed) is a small, slow-growing rosette plant ideal for aquariums and paludariums. Native to Europe, Asia, and North America, it thrives in fresh to brackish water, often in damp or salty coastal areas. Underwater, it forms light green, spatulate leaves and grows up to 10–15 cm tall and 10–20 cm wide, but often stays smaller. In shallow water or emersed, it produces upright stems with small white flowers and seeds. It’s known in the hobby under names like Samolus floribundus and S. parviflorus. Best suited for well-lit, cooler tanks (under 26 °C) with nutrient-rich substrate. It tolerates hard or soft water and up to 30 mg/L salt. In long photoperiods or shallow setups, it may develop stalks. Great for foreground placement in cold-water, brackish, or paludarium setups.

Elatine hydropiper was brought into trade as an aquarium plant in 2010 by the aquatic plant nursery Anubias. This plant has soon gained a lot of popularity with aquascapers as wonderful ground-covering plant. It looks like a miniature version of Glossostigma elatinoides. Whereas G. elatinoides can become quite invasive under good conditions, Elatine hydropiper grows only moderately and is thus much easier to handle. 

Elatine hydropiper is widely distributed in Europe up to northern Scandinavia as well as in Siberia and Northern China. In Italy it only grows in the north-west. This species grows in and on ponds, rivers and marshes. The area of distribution reaches very far north, which makes it rather astonishing that the aquarium population of E. hydropiper grows so well in tropical tanks.

This lawn-like fresh green plant with its tiny leaves is ideal for nano tanks and small aquaria, but a large carpet of E. hydropiper is also stunning in the foreground of large tanks.

This very distinctive, small-growing swordplant cultivar was described in 1985 under the name Echinodorus parviflorus 'Tropica' in the German journal Aqua Planta. It was found in the 1980s in the nursery Tropica, Denmark, among plants of Echinodorus grisebachii 'Parviflorus' (called E. parviflorus back then) that were delivered from water plant nurseries in Asia. It probably arose through mutation in one of these nurseries. Under aquarium conditions, Echinodorus grisebachii 'Tropica' gets a height of just 5 to 10 centimeters, and with its leaf shape it resembles Samolus valerandi, therefore its trivial name "Samolus swordplant". The underwater leaves are coarse, medium to dark green, a little bullate and narrowly obovate. They are rounded towards the end, with an apiculate tip. The plant develops a compact, spreading rosette of many leaves with time. The cultivar 'Tropica' not only remains much lower than other Echinodorus grisebachii forms such as 'Parviflorus' and 'Amazonicus' but also grows much slower. It also needs more light than these. For a healthy growth, good nutrient supply, also through the substrate, and CO2 addition are recommendable. The favourable temperatures are about 22-28 °C. With its small size, Echinodorus grisebachii 'Tropica' is an excellent solitary plant in nano aquariums and contrasts with finely textured plants. In larger tanks it fits well into the foreground and looks nice as a loose group of few plants.

Cryptocoryne pygmaea, dwarf crypt, comes from the Philippines. Other than its botancial and vernacular names suggest it doesn't stay especially small. On the islands Palawan, Busuanga and in western Mindanao this crypt populates rivers and rivulets, often with hard water, emersed as well as submersed, also in deeper water. For a long time it was only known from herbarium records. Most authors synonymised it with C. auriculata, which originates from Borneo (Sarawak). Only in about 1970 the first live specimens became known in Europe. In Kopenhagen, Niels Jacobsen found them in a shipment of C. aponogetifolia originating from the Philippines, and later identified them as C. pygmaea. In 1999, Jan Bastmeijer and Herson Morco found many natural habitats of this species in the north of Palawan. C. pygmaea has proven to be an excellent aquarium plant that is quite easy in cultivation. Despite that, this crypt is not very well-known in the hobby yet.

Eriocaulon sp. 'Vietnam' is not yet known for a long time in Europe, however it has already proved to be an easy aquarium plant - in contrast to a number of other Eriocaulon rarities in the aquarium hobby. This plant, not yet determined to species, was originally found in the Vietnamese province Thanh Hoa. It is a medium-sized, about 10-20 cm tall Eriocaulon with relatively broad, medium-green, arching leaves, resembling Eriocaulon sp. 'Goias'. This grass-like plant still grows with medium lighting and is even said to be suitable for hard water. However, a nutrient-rich substrate and a not too low CO2 concentration in the water column (at least 20 mg/l) are surely very conducive for its growth. With time, this plant forms a dense "grass tussock" with a number of leaf rosettes and can be divided into several single plants for propagation. Eriocaulon sp. 'Vietnam' can be used in aquascaping similarly to Blyxa japonica - e.g. as a meadow-like stand in the midground, linking the background with low groundcovers in the foreground, or as scattered tufts between hardscape elements. In contrast to similar rosette plants such as Sagittaria subulata or Helanthium bolivianum, it does not develop runners, making its handling easy. This undemanding Eriocaulon surely deserves a wide distribution in the aquarium hobby.

Limnophila sp. 'Vietnam' has only been known in Europe since around 2010 in the aquarium hobby, and it is still hard to come buy. This delicate plant is a great discovery for aquascaping. Given that it is under intensive light it develops creeping well-ramifying 3 to 4 cm wide shoots, which makes it a great ground cover. Dense populations grow higher after some time, comparable to the much slower-growing Staurogyne repens. With L. sp. 'Vietnam' you can create dense bushes that can be kept in form by regular trimming. This plant is especially well-suited for "mountain" layouts, e.g. creeping down a hill or as light green accent between rocks and driftwood. Its decorative appearance is enhanced by its very narrow, pointed leaves growing in whorls and the star-like shoot tips. Under strong light, the central veins of the leaves and the stems can assume a reddish hue.

Rotala mexicana 'Goiás' is one of the few red low-growing foreground plants. It is said to originate from the Brazilian state of Goiás. It was identified as a variant of the extremely variable Rotala mexicana. Even though it has been known to the aquarium hobby in Europe for a few years it is only rarely available and is thus a rarity. Newly placed shoots usually grow flat and creep on the substrate. When the population gets denser, more upright stems will develop. You can keep the population low by cutting it back, or let it grow to a wide bush especially nice in the middle ground of the aquarium. The combination of Rotala mexicana 'Goiás' with green stem plants results in a nice colour contrast. This rather small-leaved delicate plant is great for nano tanks.
