Rotala sp. 'Blood Red'

€5.90
Rotala rotundifolia 'Blood Red' is considered the most intensely red form of this popular aquarium plant. Its deep crimson tones are even darker and richer than those of the well-known R. rotundifolia ‘Colorata’, making it a striking centerpiece in any aquascape. When placed alongside bright green plants, its vibrant red hue stands out dramatically. This plant is relatively easy to grow and can adapt to modest lighting and nutrient levels, but to unlock its most vivid coloration, strong lighting and added CO₂ are essential. The stems grow upright to slightly arching, and under very intense light they may even spread more horizontally. Left untrimmed, shoots can reach over 50 cm in length, though the plant tends to look its best when maintained at 20–40 cm. Regular trimming and replanting of cuttings not only keep the plant at an attractive height but also encourage branching and dense, bushy growth. Occasional pruning improves light penetration and water circulation, ensuring the lower portions of the plant remain healthy and vibrant.

Lysimachia parvifolia

€9.90
This striking plant, known in the aquarium hobby as "Samolus parviflorus 'Red'", has only been available privately for a few years. It was originally discovered submerged in a river in Guangxi, China. However, its characteristics align more with Lysimachia parvifolia, a loosestrife species native to southern China, often found along stream banks, ditches, and rice paddies. Underwater, it forms a broad rosette, about 10–15 cm wide, with multiple shoots. In bright light, its leaves turn red to deep red, while lower light brings orange hues. In low light, elongated shoots may develop. The emersed form looks entirely different, producing tall flowering stems (30–50 cm) and long, creeping side shoots. The small, elliptical leaves (1–4.5 cm) range from green to reddish, and the stems take on a reddish hue. Tiny, bell-shaped white flowers bloom on upright racemes.
Easy to grow, this plant displays its most vibrant red tones under strong lighting (PAR ≥100 µmol). CO₂ is not essential but encourages lush growth, along with nutrient-rich substrate. Its temperature tolerance is broad, reflecting its subtropical origins with hot summers and mild winters. Propagation is simple – separating rosettes or floating severed leaves, which sprout new roots and shoots, much like Hygrophila. Still a rarity, Lysimachia parvifolia is an eye-catching red accent for the aquarium foreground to midground. Though less striking in its terrestrial form, its creeping shoots and delicate white flowers make it a unique addition to paludariums and wabi-kusa setups.

Rotala sp. 'Orange Juice'

€5.90
Rotala sp. 'Orange Juice' is a selection from Massimo Iannella a passionate plant enthusiast from Italy. The Orange Juice Rotala is like Rotala rotundifolia a time-tested popular stem plant wonderfully suitable for aquascaping. Its emerged form has roundish leaves, in the aquarium they grow to a longer, narrow form. Compared with other Rotala species it is relatively undemanding. This highly variable species is widely distributed in the Asian subtropics and tropics; standard variants available in trade are light green to reddish under water, depending on the light intensity. The leaves of the Orange Juice Rotala have stunning orange in the emerged and submerged form.

Cryptocoryne spiralis 'Tiger'

€7.90
Cryptocoryne spiralis 'Tiger' is a unique aquarium plant that is suitable for the midground area of a planted aquarium. This Crypt variety is characterized by long, thin leaves that display an interesting pattern and are reddish brown in color. Cryptocoryne spiralis 'Tiger' is a medium to large sized specimen, making it a fantastic choice for transitioning the midground to the background area of the planted tank. Like other Cryptocoryne plants, Cryptocoryne spiralis 'Tiger' is relatively easy-going, but needs to become established first. We recommend planting this species in an aquarium that is already established as newly setup aquariums may contribute to chances of Crypt melt. Once this aquarium plant grows a solid root system, it is sure to standout in the aquascape layout!
As several other Cryptocoryne spiralis forms, 'Tiger' is apparently a quite easy aquarium plant. Nutrient-rich substrate and CO2 addition are very beneficial for its growth. It is not a low-light plant, the lighting should be at least moderate, and strong light enhances its showy coloration. With time, daughter rosettes appear at the base of the plant that develops a tuft with many leaves and strong roots. The daughter plants can be cut off for propagation. We have not yet noticed long runners in C. spiralis 'Tiger'.
Cryptocoryne spiralis 'Tiger' is an eye-catcher in not too small aquariums, best as a solitary bush in the midground. Its red-brown tones contrast well with light green plants.

Price per: 1 plant (grown emersed).

Mayaca sp. 'Santarem Red'

€6.90
Mayaca sp. 'Santarem Red' is a rather small to medium-sized aquatic plant, native to Brazil. In Europe it is hardly known and has not yet been scientifically researched. We refer to it as Santarém moss herb. In terms of its appearance, it is a fine-leaved and at the same time sublime aquatic plant, which knows of its beauty and elegance. It's amazing that it looks very natural despite its peculiarity. In terms of color, it brings out shades of light green to pink and reddish shades, where the stem, on the other hand, remains whitish. Requirements of this plant, if you want to see these bright/deep hues of red, you will need stronger lighting to bring it out. Fertilizers will help bring out the colors, but they aren’t necessary to keep this plant growing healthily. If you consider a few things that Mayaca sp. Santarem claims, it is a beautiful plant that is also suitable for newcomers.

Didiplis diandra

€4.95
Didiplis diandra (De Candolle) Wood, also known as Peplis diandra, originates from the east of the USA, where it can be found on the edges of ponds, lakes and on slow-flowing waterbodies. It is considered endangered in some states. When kept under optimal conditions, it forms small pinkish pods in its axils. Its one-of-a-kind fine foliage makes it a very popular and rather widely spread aquarium plant.
All in all it is not difficult to cultivate, however, it has some requirements that ought to be met to make sure it grows well. There should be sufficient light, i.e. 0.6 - 1 watt per litre. Under less light, the lower parts of the plants tend to die off and rot away. However, please keep in mind that under more intensive light the plant will also need more iron and micronutrients. Faded, pale plants are a sure sign that Didiplis diandra suffers from an iron deficit. It is not absolutely necessary to add CO2, however, fertilising with CO2 results in considerably faster and healthier growth. Nitrate, phosphate and potassium have to be added in regular intervals, as well as iron and micronutrients, which Didiplis diandra craves. When kept in optimal conditions and under lots of light, Didiplis diandra shows colours from orange to red hues. Under less light, the plant tends to stay green.
This stem plant grows up to the water surface, where it throws many lateral shoots and grows very dense. To further a bushy look, just cut off the top shoot, which results in many new lateral shoots. Propagation is very easy, just cut off top and lateral shoots and replant into the substrate.
Didiplis diandra is used in Dutch as well as in nature aquaria as a colour and, due to its highly special leaf form, as a structural accent. It is best planted in the middle or in the background.

Hygrophila polysperma 'Sunset'

€4.90
Hygrophila polysperma 'Sunset', or 'Rosanervig' (red-vein) as it was named by the Danish aquatic plant nursery Tropica, was originally cultivated in the mid 1980's. One note of interest about this plant is the white coloration the leaf veins often exhibit. This is not a sign of a deficiency but rather it is believed to be caused by a virus that blocks the production of chlorophyll in the surrounding tissue. This virus, fortunately, is specific to this particular species and poses absolutely no threat to anything else in the aquarium. This beautiful variation of the steadfast H. polysperma, a native of Asia, has become a common but popular addition to the planted aquarium hobby. This undemanding yet interesting stem plant is one of the easiest colored red plants to grow. Its ability to handle virtually any temperature (18-28C), pH (5-8), or hardness in the typical planted aquarium makes it suitable for many applications. While CO2 and high light are not requirements for this cultivar to grow, they are essential in bringing out the nice red to pink color for which this plant is famous. Iron is another factor in intense coloration without enough Fe in the water column, this plant will become pale or, in extreme deficiencies, even white. This plant, like many of the faster growing stem plants, can develop a tendency for horizontal growth and creep along the substrate. This is often caused by higher light levels and a plant's natural tendency to 'take over' as much space as it can before it changes to producing more vertical growth. Ways to avoid this are to crowd the plant or to increase phosphate (PO4) levels. Propagating and pruning this plant is very simple. Simply top and replant. This species produces many side shoots when pruned like a hedge, creating an attractive, manicured bush. H. polysperma 'Sunset' has great potential as a red stem plant. Its interesting leaf texture and color make it a great addition to the mid- or background. The leaf size, up to 5 cm, is not overly large, making it suitable for all but the smallest aquaria.

Ludwigia repens 'Mesakana'

€4.90
This colourful, round-leaved plant is selection of Ludwigia repens. Ludwigia repens 'Mesakana' is not a particularly difficult plant, but has somewhat higher demands than "standard" L. repens. A good macro and micronutrient supply is important, also rather soft water is beneficial. Good lighting provides vibrand red and orange tones. In the midground to background of not too small aquaria, a bush of Ludwigia repens 'Mesakana' provides a colourful eyecatcher. It contrasts well with fine-textured green plants. In comparison to other varietys of L. repens and to L. palustris x repens, the leaves of L. repens "Mesakana" grow larger, and have a rounder form. They are also more colourful and have a more pronounced pattern.

Rotala sp. 'Sunset'

€6.95
Rotala sp. 'Sunset' is also known as Ammannia sp. 'Sulawesi'. Rotala sp. 'Sunset' is a great midground plant that has great color and grows vertical. This plant is a difficult to grow for many in the hobby, but will also grow low tech. That doesn’t make a lot of sense but is actually how some plants are. They just do not like to be pushed in a high tech environment unless all their needs are met. Rotala sp. 'Sunset' is difficult to classify as hard or easy, if you have trouble with the plant then try it in different parts of the aquarium or in low tech as well as high tech.

Cuphea anagalloidea

€7.50
This plant was brought into the hobby as Rotala sp. 'Araguaia'. Only recently (2010), after it was brought to bloom, Cavan Allen was able to identfiy the true species of this alleged Rotala species by comparing it with samples from the Smithsonian Herbarium (Washington, D.C.). The genus Cuphea holds around 260 species and is distributed in the American tropics and subtropics. There are only a few aquatic Cuphea species, and C. anagalloidea is the first plant of the genus that is cultivated in aquaria. This species is endemic in Brazil, where it is distributed in the north, east, and south-east (Pará, Tocantins, Bahia, Goiás, Minas Gerais). Cuphea anagalloidea is a small, demanding stem plant. Its shoots grow around 1.5 to 2 cm wide, measured from leaf tip to leaf tip. The striking red colour on the upper side of the submersed leaves is most intensive under strong light, and it can look like it was brushed on. The red leaves often have small green spots. Emersed plants have green leaves and grow to an overall larger size.

Ammannia crassicaulis

€6.95
Ammannia crassicaulis from Africa is also known as Nesaea crassicaulis. It is is a beautiful and highly recommended aquarium plant, although it has high demands for light. It has red-brown, cognac-coloured leaves. Stems becomes 30-50 cm and 8-15 cm wide and develop a reddish coloration under water. Grows best in soft and slightly acidic water. Make sure the lower leaves get sufficient light, otherwise they will die off. Easy to propagate by side shoots or cuttings, which can be cut off and planted in the bottom. Ammannia crassicaulis, is distributed in swamps, rice paddies and rivulets of the African and Madagascan tropics. It is often confused with Ammannia gracilis, which indeed looks very similar, however, in the aquarium it has less intensively red hues, but is rather of a yellowish green to pale red. Most plants in trade that are sold under the name N. crassicaulis really are Ammannia gracilis.

Rotala sp. 'H' Ra'

€4.40
Rotala 'H’ra' has rather narrow leaves and an overhanging or creeping growth. It is probably a variation of Rotala rotundifolia and has much resemblance to Rotala sp. ‘Green’. High light levels, good fertilization and added CO2 will induce almost exclusively creeping growth and a warm, rich orange coloration. This makes it possible to create a dense, orange mid-ground cushion or even an unusual, orange foreground carpet.

Hygrophila lancea 'Araguaia'

€5.90
This Hygrophila was named after the Brazilian river Araguaia in trade, however, later on it was identified as the Asian species Hygrophila lancea. Under water it grows lineal reddish-brown leaves with a lighter-coloured central vein. Its stems have a creeping growth habit, ramify well and form low bushes. It needs a good CO2 supply. Trimming the leaves maintains the bushy form. Hygrophila lancea 'Araguaia' needs intensive lighting, and in contrast to most other Hygrophila species it is a rather slow grower. Usually it is sold in its emerged form and differs very much from the underwater form, which develops after it has been placed in the aquarium.

Rotala mexicana 'Goias'

€9.90
Rotala mexicana 'Goiás' is one of the few red low-growing foreground plants. It is said to originate from the Brazilian state of Goiás. It was identified as a variant of the extremely variable Rotala mexicana. Even though it has been known to the aquarium hobby in Europe for a few years it is only rarely available and is thus a rarity. Newly placed shoots usually grow flat and creep on the substrate. When the population gets denser, more upright stems will develop. You can keep the population low by cutting it back, or let it grow to a wide bush especially nice in the middle ground of the aquarium. The combination of Rotala mexicana 'Goiás' with green stem plants results in a nice colour contrast. This rather small-leaved delicate plant is great for nano tanks.
