Limnophila hippuridoides

€5.90
Limnophila hippuridoides is a striking stem plant from the Malayan peninsula, often confused with Limnophila aromatica, but it has more than three leaves per whorl. It features reddish to deep purple-toned submerged leaves and a light green stem, with shoots around 6–10 cm wide. Ideal for mid- to background placement in larger tanks, it grows 20–50 cm tall and thrives with strong light, CO₂, and nutrient-rich conditions. Prefers soft to medium-hard water and temps between 22–27 °C. Propagated easily via cuttings, it's a fast grower and vibrant focal point.

Rotala sp. 'Orange Juice'

€5.90
Rotala sp. 'Orange Juice' is a selection from Massimo Iannella a passionate plant enthusiast from Italy. The Orange Juice Rotala is like Rotala rotundifolia a time-tested popular stem plant wonderfully suitable for aquascaping. Its emerged form has roundish leaves, in the aquarium they grow to a longer, narrow form. Compared with other Rotala species it is relatively undemanding. This highly variable species is widely distributed in the Asian subtropics and tropics; standard variants available in trade are light green to reddish under water, depending on the light intensity. The leaves of the Orange Juice Rotala have stunning orange in the emerged and submerged form.

Micranthemum umbrosum

€3.90
Micranthemum umbrosum is a delicate light green bushy stem plant with small round leaves. It is most attractive when cultivated as a dense bush in the fore- and middle ground. A relatively strong lighting with at least 0.5 W/litre is required for good growth, all in all, Micranthemum umbrosum is not very difficult in cultivation. Sometimes M. umbrosum has difficulties adapting to a new environment, but once acclimated it is not a very demanding plant, apart from its hunger for light. A relatively strong lighting of at least 0.5 W/L is required for good growth. A lack of light results in the plant throwing off its lower leaves, or in holey leaves. At the same time, the stems become brittle and tends to break, so small pieces of the plant drift to the surface where light is more intensive. This plant may be cultivated without additional CO2 injection, however, its growth rate decreases significantly, and the leaves grow smaller. If the basic requirements of M. umbrosum are met, it is really easy to propagate. Just cut off a main shoot somewhere on the stem and re-plant it in the substrate, it will grow new roots very quickly and form a stand-alone plant after a very short time. M. umbrosum tends to throw a large number of new lateral shoots, which develop in the leaf axils some centimetres below the top of a main shoot. If you cut back the plant you can further this development even more, and by frequent trimming you can create rather dense plant mats. M. umbrosum is usually planted in the middle- or background of an aquascape. Extremely strong lighting may induce it to grow rather flattish and creeping, then it can also be used in the foreground of the aquarium.

Mayaca sp. 'Santarem Red'

€6.90
Mayaca sp. 'Santarem Red' is a rather small to medium-sized aquatic plant, native to Brazil. In Europe it is hardly known and has not yet been scientifically researched. We refer to it as Santarém moss herb. In terms of its appearance, it is a fine-leaved and at the same time sublime aquatic plant, which knows of its beauty and elegance. It's amazing that it looks very natural despite its peculiarity. In terms of color, it brings out shades of light green to pink and reddish shades, where the stem, on the other hand, remains whitish. Requirements of this plant, if you want to see these bright/deep hues of red, you will need stronger lighting to bring it out. Fertilizers will help bring out the colors, but they aren’t necessary to keep this plant growing healthily. If you consider a few things that Mayaca sp. Santarem claims, it is a beautiful plant that is also suitable for newcomers.

Tonina fluviatilis

€7.50
Tonina fluviatilis is an exceptional, especially decorative stem plant from the tropics of Central and South America. There it grows emersed and submerged in soft, acid, clear waters, also in blackwater biotopes. It is a member of the Pipewort family (Eriocaulaceae) as well as Eriocaulon and Syngonanthus. Only in recent times Tonina fluviatilis has gained wider distribution in the aquarium hobby. Its thin, branched stems are densely set with lanceolate, only about 1 - 1.5 cm long leaves that are a freshly light green colour with slightly silvery shine under water. As a typical soft water plant, Tonina fluviatilis is suited for appropriate aquariums with soft, rather acid water and high CO2 concentration (about 20-30 mg/l). It prefers also strong lighting. An acid substrate, for example a type of aquasoil, is recommendable, as well as as a balanced nutrient supply, particularly with micronutrients. Its growth rate is only moderate. Tonina is easily propagated by stem cuttings. Tonina fluviatilis looks especially well as a group in the midground to background. With its exotic habit it fits well in tanks with other unusual plants, e.g. Syngonanthus and Eriocaulon species, sharing the same demands with them. It is also interesting for blackwater biotope aquariums, provided that its high lighting and CO2 demands can be covered.

Didiplis diandra

€4.95
Didiplis diandra (De Candolle) Wood, also known as Peplis diandra, originates from the east of the USA, where it can be found on the edges of ponds, lakes and on slow-flowing waterbodies. It is considered endangered in some states. When kept under optimal conditions, it forms small pinkish pods in its axils. Its one-of-a-kind fine foliage makes it a very popular and rather widely spread aquarium plant.
All in all it is not difficult to cultivate, however, it has some requirements that ought to be met to make sure it grows well. There should be sufficient light, i.e. 0.6 - 1 watt per litre. Under less light, the lower parts of the plants tend to die off and rot away. However, please keep in mind that under more intensive light the plant will also need more iron and micronutrients. Faded, pale plants are a sure sign that Didiplis diandra suffers from an iron deficit. It is not absolutely necessary to add CO2, however, fertilising with CO2 results in considerably faster and healthier growth. Nitrate, phosphate and potassium have to be added in regular intervals, as well as iron and micronutrients, which Didiplis diandra craves. When kept in optimal conditions and under lots of light, Didiplis diandra shows colours from orange to red hues. Under less light, the plant tends to stay green.
This stem plant grows up to the water surface, where it throws many lateral shoots and grows very dense. To further a bushy look, just cut off the top shoot, which results in many new lateral shoots. Propagation is very easy, just cut off top and lateral shoots and replant into the substrate.
Didiplis diandra is used in Dutch as well as in nature aquaria as a colour and, due to its highly special leaf form, as a structural accent. It is best planted in the middle or in the background.

Pogostemon erectus

€4.60
Pogostemon erectus, a species from India, differs very much from the standard Pogostemon species in the aquarium hobby. This plant was erroneously imported as Rotala verticillaris, and later on correctly identified by means of its flowers. The light green needle-like narrow leaves grow densely on the stems. The plant is especially beautiful when planted in dense groups in the middle or background. When provided with good light (at least 0.5 W/litre), the addition of CO2 and regular fertilisation, this Pogostemon is not especially difficult in cultivation. When cultivated emerged, beautiful candle-like flower spikes with a characteristic smell will form when the plant gets sufficient light. In aquascaping, this species is best used in the background of an aquarium. Only in very large tanks it can be used further to the front. If it is provided with limited nitrogen it will develop a moderate growth rate, which is easier to handle, if the nitrogen supply is too high it will grow really, really fast. Its fine light green foliage is especially effective neighbouring red or magenta-coloured plants like Persicaria praetermissa. When the shoot tip is cut off, many lateral shoots are formed, so that the group grows very dense after some time. Then thorough trimming becomes a must.

Hygrophila polysperma 'Sunset'

€4.90
Hygrophila polysperma 'Sunset', or 'Rosanervig' (red-vein) as it was named by the Danish aquatic plant nursery Tropica, was originally cultivated in the mid 1980's. One note of interest about this plant is the white coloration the leaf veins often exhibit. This is not a sign of a deficiency but rather it is believed to be caused by a virus that blocks the production of chlorophyll in the surrounding tissue. This virus, fortunately, is specific to this particular species and poses absolutely no threat to anything else in the aquarium. This beautiful variation of the steadfast H. polysperma, a native of Asia, has become a common but popular addition to the planted aquarium hobby. This undemanding yet interesting stem plant is one of the easiest colored red plants to grow. Its ability to handle virtually any temperature (18-28C), pH (5-8), or hardness in the typical planted aquarium makes it suitable for many applications. While CO2 and high light are not requirements for this cultivar to grow, they are essential in bringing out the nice red to pink color for which this plant is famous. Iron is another factor in intense coloration without enough Fe in the water column, this plant will become pale or, in extreme deficiencies, even white. This plant, like many of the faster growing stem plants, can develop a tendency for horizontal growth and creep along the substrate. This is often caused by higher light levels and a plant's natural tendency to 'take over' as much space as it can before it changes to producing more vertical growth. Ways to avoid this are to crowd the plant or to increase phosphate (PO4) levels. Propagating and pruning this plant is very simple. Simply top and replant. This species produces many side shoots when pruned like a hedge, creating an attractive, manicured bush. H. polysperma 'Sunset' has great potential as a red stem plant. Its interesting leaf texture and color make it a great addition to the mid- or background. The leaf size, up to 5 cm, is not overly large, making it suitable for all but the smallest aquaria.

Rotala sp. 'Sunset'

€6.95
Rotala sp. 'Sunset' is also known as Ammannia sp. 'Sulawesi'. Rotala sp. 'Sunset' is a great midground plant that has great color and grows vertical. This plant is a difficult to grow for many in the hobby, but will also grow low tech. That doesn’t make a lot of sense but is actually how some plants are. They just do not like to be pushed in a high tech environment unless all their needs are met. Rotala sp. 'Sunset' is difficult to classify as hard or easy, if you have trouble with the plant then try it in different parts of the aquarium or in low tech as well as high tech.

Cuphea anagalloidea

€7.50
This plant was brought into the hobby as Rotala sp. 'Araguaia'. Only recently (2010), after it was brought to bloom, Cavan Allen was able to identfiy the true species of this alleged Rotala species by comparing it with samples from the Smithsonian Herbarium (Washington, D.C.). The genus Cuphea holds around 260 species and is distributed in the American tropics and subtropics. There are only a few aquatic Cuphea species, and C. anagalloidea is the first plant of the genus that is cultivated in aquaria. This species is endemic in Brazil, where it is distributed in the north, east, and south-east (Pará, Tocantins, Bahia, Goiás, Minas Gerais). Cuphea anagalloidea is a small, demanding stem plant. Its shoots grow around 1.5 to 2 cm wide, measured from leaf tip to leaf tip. The striking red colour on the upper side of the submersed leaves is most intensive under strong light, and it can look like it was brushed on. The red leaves often have small green spots. Emersed plants have green leaves and grow to an overall larger size.

Hydrocotyle tripartita 'Mini'

€5.90
This remarkable pennywort from Australia was previously unknown in Europe. Its leaves are about half the size of normal Hydrocotyle tripartita. As well as normal H. tripartita, 'Mini' grows best with rather strong lighting and good CO2 and nutrient supply. As a smaller leaved pendant to Hydrocotyle tripartita, this dwarfish pennywort is very interesting for the aquascaping, not least for nano aquariums. Under lower lights it grows more slowly, and its sprouts have a more upright than creeping growth habit.

Ammannia crassicaulis

€6.95
Ammannia crassicaulis from Africa is also known as Nesaea crassicaulis. It is is a beautiful and highly recommended aquarium plant, although it has high demands for light. It has red-brown, cognac-coloured leaves. Stems becomes 30-50 cm and 8-15 cm wide and develop a reddish coloration under water. Grows best in soft and slightly acidic water. Make sure the lower leaves get sufficient light, otherwise they will die off. Easy to propagate by side shoots or cuttings, which can be cut off and planted in the bottom. Ammannia crassicaulis, is distributed in swamps, rice paddies and rivulets of the African and Madagascan tropics. It is often confused with Ammannia gracilis, which indeed looks very similar, however, in the aquarium it has less intensively red hues, but is rather of a yellowish green to pale red. Most plants in trade that are sold under the name N. crassicaulis really are Ammannia gracilis.

Rotala sp. 'H' Ra'

€4.40
Rotala 'H’ra' has rather narrow leaves and an overhanging or creeping growth. It is probably a variation of Rotala rotundifolia and has much resemblance to Rotala sp. ‘Green’. High light levels, good fertilization and added CO2 will induce almost exclusively creeping growth and a warm, rich orange coloration. This makes it possible to create a dense, orange mid-ground cushion or even an unusual, orange foreground carpet.

Hygrophila lancea 'Araguaia'

€5.90
This Hygrophila was named after the Brazilian river Araguaia in trade, however, later on it was identified as the Asian species Hygrophila lancea. Under water it grows lineal reddish-brown leaves with a lighter-coloured central vein. Its stems have a creeping growth habit, ramify well and form low bushes. It needs a good CO2 supply. Trimming the leaves maintains the bushy form. Hygrophila lancea 'Araguaia' needs intensive lighting, and in contrast to most other Hygrophila species it is a rather slow grower. Usually it is sold in its emerged form and differs very much from the underwater form, which develops after it has been placed in the aquarium.

Ludwigia sphaerocarpa

€6.95
An uncommon Ludwigia not long known in the aquarium hobby. Under water it forms beautiful compact almost rosette-like ascending shoots. Unlike previously cultivated Ludwigia species, L. sphaerocarpa is suited for the foreground and middle areas of aquascapes. With care and some careful pruning, strikingly attractive, mounded reddish-orange crowns can form. Stems that have become established can grow to around 15 cm wide from leaf tip to leaf tip, so some room is definitely required. If any become too large, they may be removed, and in a short time, several new, smaller shoots will form. Not small enough to form the basis of a foreground, it can instead compliment smaller species, which can help cover its less attractive lower portions. To maintain low growth and to preserve the health of the plant itself, strong lighting and a lack of shade are absolutely required; otherwise, plants remain green and grow much more slowly. If such conditions persist, the plants may eventually die. Although L. sphaerocarpa is probably not a plant for beginners, it will certainly have a lasting place in aquarium culture.

Price per: 1 plant.

Hygrophila sp. 'Brown'

€5.90
This undemanding stem plant is likely a variant of Hygrophila polysperma. It is still new to the aquarium hobby and was probably also introduced with the name Hygrophila sp. 'Thai'. The stems grow partly horizontal to ascending, forming loose, broad bushes. Hygrophila sp. 'Brown' grows well with medium lighting; optimal growth is achieved by CO2 injection and good nutrient supply. Trimming promotes the development of side shoots and a bushier growth. With its loose, bushy, somewhat irregular habit, this Hygrophila is well placed in the midground. With its coloration, It contrasts to light green plants. This fast-growing plant is also recommendable for freshly set-up tanks.

Price per: 3 stems (grown emersed).
